Savitribai Phule: The Woman Who Changed Education in India

Early Life and Background 🎓

Savitribai Phule was born on January 3, 1831, in Naigaon, Maharashtra. At a time when most girls in India were not allowed to study, she broke barriers and became India’s first female teacher. Her husband, Jyotirao Phule, recognized her potential and taught her to read and write. This was just the beginning of her remarkable journey.

Contribution to Education 📚

Savitribai and her husband believed that education was the key to changing society. In 1848, they started the first school for girls in Pune. This was revolutionary because, at the time, educating girls was considered unnecessary or even wrong. Many people opposed them, throwing stones and dirt at Savitribai whenever she walked to school. But she did not stop. She carried an extra sari so she could change if people threw dirt on her.

Over the years, she and Jyotirao opened many schools for girls, Dalits (formerly called untouchables), and other marginalized groups. By 1851, they had three schools with over 150 students. Her efforts helped create a foundation for girls’ education in India, which later became a movement.

Husband of Savitribai Phulle Shree Jyotibai Phulle was close to Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati to social upliftments as he met together many times and talked. In July 1875 there was a shobhayatra of Arya Samaj directed by Maharshi Dayanand in Pune Jyotibhai Phulle was walking in one side of Swami Dayanand and a great Arya Samaji Justice Givindbhai Ranaday was walking in other side of Maharshi Dayanand. These great persons were bones of that Shobha Yatra. Women education untouchability humanity one God faith social upliftments were common factors to be covered between Phulle and Maharshi Dayanand. Arya Samaj recognized great jobs of Jyotibhai and Savitribai Phulle in its history.

Social Reforms and Women’s Rights ✊

Many widows who became pregnant due to social exploitation were forced to abandon or kill their babies. Savitribai provided them with a safe place to live and raise their children with dignity.
